How I Turned Around my Leadership Success
When I was working in a leadership position, I grew frustrated with the drama and chaos of misunderstandings and bad communication. I experienced how traditional leadership skills were failing the mission and goals of my organization.
There had to be a better way, an easier way, to manage people and achieve our goals.
I began to study how leaders working in isolation and staff working in competitive silos adversely affect the prosperity and growth of the whole. I studied brain-based research in order to understand how emotions, stories, thinking errors, and fears impact our ability to create positive work environments.
I began experimenting with ways to bring this research into my own leadership. I refined my approach to communication until I had a process, a set of definite steps that I could use time and again successfully.
Then, as a leadership consultant, I began teaching my approach to my clients. This process was helping humans thrive in the workplace with a collaborative team chemistry.
My Process Became Navigating Challenging Dialogue
The heart of Navigating Challenging Dialogue is doing that actual work of processing a challenging dialogue that you need to have, but you may be feeling resistance towards.
When you learn NCD we also explore why the process works. By understanding the impact of emotions, stories, thinking errors, and fears we are developing social and emotional intelligence. By learning to recognize how our brains process information, we can short-circuit reactions, and instead choose to deliberately respond – and that clarity is the foundation of healthy communication and collaboration.
To have a clear and clean dialogue we have to break down the details that you want to have a conversation about. We must determine what the facts are, which we do by a system of elimination. We also examine how energy, assumptions, and common thinking errors impact everything.
The NCD Process has Four Stages
Stage 1 – The story
This is where you lay out every detail that you know. Every fact, every story, and every assumption.
Stage 2 – Whose issue is it anyways?
You'll learn how to examine and eliminate any assumptions, projections, and stories that are not cold hard facts. This is where we go deep into revealing thinking errors that can trip us up.
In Stage 3 – Reframing the story
You'll learn how to reframe the story by probing more deeply to determine what is 100% the truth and essential for the conversation. At this point, you’ll know whether you really need to have this conversation with the other party or if it’s time for self-examination.
Stage 4 – Preparing for the dialogue
When you’re ready for a conversation with the other party, this is where you will follow the steps to set yourself up for a conversation that serves the good of the whole.
We Have a Mission for 2020
We want to help even more people learn the NCD process and get hands-on experience working the steps on their own dialogues. The velocity of change is only increasing, and with it comes more communication challenges.
I have only so many days to do workshops – and those are limited enrollment – so, we came up with a way that you can learn from the ease of your own computer. You can now learn NCD online at https://NCDprocess.com.
For organizations, we offer tailored training and services to address the specific challenges they’re facing. You can request a quote here.
